Basque Region Cities Story
I. On the Dawn of your time
When the ice ages receded and the main human groups roamed the humid valleys on the Cantabrian Sea, the lands we now contact Euskal Herria have been already a refuge. Inside the caves of Santimamiñe, Ekain, Isturitz, and Aitzbitarte, nameless arms left bison, horses, and symbols that still appear to resonate currently.
They were being hunter-gatherer peoples, adapted to rugged mountains, swift rivers, and coasts rich in fish.

II. The Vascones, Caristii, Varduli, and Autrigones

• Varduli in Gipuzkoa

These weren't centralized kingdoms, but somewhat tribal confederations. They practiced livestock farming, transhumant herding, and Atlantic trade.
Rome arrived, but hardly ever fully subdued them. The mountains, forests, and native resistance intended that Romanization was confined: roadways, bridges, agricultural villas… though the language and many customs continued by themselves route.
III. In between Empires: The Early Middle Ages
After the fall of Rome, these lands lay amongst two worlds: the Frankish plus the Visigothic.
Through this time, a name emerged that might resonate for centuries: Vasconia.
• In Navarre, the Vascones organized on their own all around Pamplona.
• From the Northern Basque Place (Iparralde), the Duchy of Vasconia stretched with the Garonne River towards the Pyrenees.
• In Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava, regional lineages managed autonomy amidst the mountains and valleys.
The Vikings attacked the Coastline; the Franks tried to manage the Pyrenean passes; the Visigoths and later on the Muslims clashed on the Ebro frontier.
Though the Basque communities survived, adapting without the need of shedding their id.
IV. The Kingdom of Pamplona / Kingdom of Navarre
Inside the 9th century, the Kingdom of Pamplona was born, which would afterwards turn out to be the Kingdom of Navarre.
For centuries, it had been a key participant in peninsular and European politics.
• Navarre was the center of power.
• Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, and Álava were connected to the kingdom at various periods.
• The Northern Basque Region (Iparralde) was Section of the Navarrese sphere of impact right up until the growth with the Capetian dynasty.
The Way of St. James brought trade, monasteries, bridges, and new Concepts.
